Suggestions for Use
1. Other themes under which this lesson could be taught:
- Government
- Citizenship
- Education
- Politics
- Letter writing
- Voting
- Community involvement
2. Modify for different levels. For example:
- Beginner level: letter writing campaign (see Step 4). Even the newest writers can be encouraged to write a short letter to a
representative about a personal concern. Or, arrange for students to visit the local library. There the class can learn to access
different resources such as magazines, microfilm, and the Internet.
- Low-Intermediate level: see the above suggestions. Also, students at this level can complete Steps 1-5 with a less complex issue.
3. Use as preparation for tackling an even larger project. For example:
- Commit to a current cause in need of support.
- Plan a money-raising event that would fund a trip to our nation's capitol.
- Help a classmate get elected to a minor public office such as the school committee or town council.
