Researching Jobs
Web-based Lesson Plan by Susan Dvorsky
Objectives:
-To learn to access employment information from the Internet.
-To be able to evaluate whether a job would be good for the individual by obtaining
factual information.
-To become knowledgeable about jobs and reinforce existing knowledge about jobs
Class/Level: Upper levels of the ABE and ESOL classes and all GED classes. The students have prior knowledge of the computer. The students may or may not have been on-line before.
Teacher Preparation: Have a list of local companies and their web site addresses. This was done prior to the class. I have selected three URLs. A hand out was prepared before the class containing job related information.
Web Sites:
Northeast Health Care
http://www.nehealth.com
Albany Medical Center
http://amc.eduBell Atlantic
http://www.bellatlantic.com
Pre-computer/classroom activities: The students work in the classroom with a series of books called Vocational Biographies. They explore occupations, such as the Home Health Aid, Personal Care Aid, Nursing Assistant. The students would find these jobs, while researching the health care web sites. Customer service jobs and related fields would also be researched to prepare them for the Bell Atlantic web site.
Computer/online activity: Students will be divided up according to ability. Students who have prior knowledge and experience can have a choice of working on either the computer alone or assisting people with less experience. I will assist students with getting online and we all will be working with the same web site. A hand out will be used and filled out as much as possible. We will go on to the next site. We will discuss and compare the similarities and differences of the sites. We will keep a list of job titles that we are not knowledgeable about and we can look them up in our classroom at another class time.
