Field trips are best when students already know something about what they will be doing and seeing on the trip.  So we studied several things before we went:
 

We read the novel Lyddie by Katherine Paterson,

• We read about the history of Lowell and its fabric industry in the 19th century, 

• We studied how the mills were powered at that time by making water wheels in class.
