A Framework for Adult Numeracy.

In July 1996, as a result of ANPN's (Adult Numeracy Practitioners' Network now ANN) year-long project of information-gathering from adult learners, teachers, employers, and other stakeholders, A Framework for Adult Numeracy Standards: The Mathematical Skills and Abilities Adults Need to be Equipped for the Future was published for the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) and its Equipped for the Future Initiative.  The Framework synthesized the data into seven numeracy themes, which include key findings as well as implications for teaching and learning.  The seven numeracy themes or focal areas essential to adult mathematical literacy were identified as:  Problem-Solving/Decision-Making/Reasoning;  Communication:  Numbers and Number Sense:  Data--Data Analysis/Probability and Statistics/Graphing:  Geometry-- Spatial Sense/Measurement;  Algebra--Patterns/Functions:  Relevance/Connections.

More information about the publication may be obtained through the local area representatives of ANN (the Adult Numeracy Network)
