The Trainers
In February of 1997 seven teacher-trainers, under the leadership of Margaret Hampstead, then director of the Central New York Staff Development Consortium, met to begin the development of numeracy workshops designed to help adult educators throughout the state implement the New York State Standards as well as the skills and competencies identified in the SCANS (Dept. of Labors Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills). These workshops were also designed to assist adult educators in understanding the implications, for mathematics instruction, of the research done by the Adult Numeracy Practitioners Network (ANPN) as was reported in their publication, A Framework for Adult Numeracy Standards: The Mathematical Skills and Abilities Adults Need to be Equipped for the Future. The trainers represented five of the ten New York State Adult Education Staff Development Consortia, Chip Moulton from Central NY, JoAnn Belcoure from the North Country, Judy Reagan and Marcia Stekloff from Western NY, Claire Ryan from the Capital Region, Nora Chomicz and Eileen Simons from Long Island. All are enthusiastic numeracy practitioners.
