The students write about their experiences at the Perth Amboy Adult School and offer advice to new students:

My name is GLADYS TORRES. I am from Puerto Rico. I came from the United States in November, 1986. I have two children, 9 and 11 years old. I decided to come to the Adult School to learn English. Sometimes my sons need help with their homework and now I can help them. I’m happy. This experience is beautiful for me because in my classroom I see many people of different languages and cultures. Now I learn English in school and learn different cultures with my friends. I want to say thank you to all the teachers and to the Director, Ana Cruz, for helping and doing good work with all students.
When you come to the Adult School, go to the office first for more information about the hours and classes. You need to speak with Julie Figueroa. Ask her what papers you need. In some cases, you need photo I.D., birth certificate and Social Security card. I recommend that you come to this school. You learn quickly and all the teachers will work with you.

My name is JASWINDER. I come from India. I came to the United States on January 20, 1998. My native language is Hindi and my second language is English. I’ve lived in Carteret, New Jersey for three months and before that in Mt. Kisco, New York. After I got married I moved to Carteret.
I studied in India for 15 years. My father speaks English. He is a United States citizen. My mother doesn’t speak English. My brother goes to high school. My husband speaks English, but only a little. He is interested in learning. I come to Perth Amboy Adult School to improve my English and to get a better job. I like the school and the teachers. The teachers help with everything. I’m happy I’m improving my English.

My name is JUANA QUIROZ. When I first came to the Perth Amboy Adult School, I talked to the secretary, Elizabeth Quiñones. She was very polite and gave me papers to fill out. Then a nice lady gave me a writing test. Then Mrs. Valenty gave me a speaking test and gave me a temporary class schedule. I like this school and the teachers.

My name is BERNABE FRANCISCO. If you come to the Perth Amboy Adult School, you can get your GED Certificate which means it is equivalent to the High School Diploma. Besides that, you can learn the English language which helps you prepare to go to college or the university.
The Perth Amboy Adult School has many other programs to help the whole family (adults and children), including summer program classes for children. The teachers and staff always discuss ideas and projects to improve the system in general.
